SUMMARY:Adult Attachment Interview Training (New York\, US)
DESCRIPTION:Training Cost: $3000\n\nLearning to score and code the Adult At
tachment Interview begins with\n a two-week intensive training institute.
As important background\, the \ninstitute starts with a brief summary of B
owlby’s attachment theory\, a \ndescription of the Infant Attachment cat
egories of Mary Ainsworth \n(including the Strange Situation Procedure)\,
and the subsequent links to\n adult attachment theory and the Adult Attach
ment Interview. Following \nthis preliminary review\, the bulk of the trai
ning is focused on the AAI \nscoring and coding system developed by Mary M
ain and Ruth Goldwyn. AAI \ntranscripts are both studied and scored by tra
inees outside of class and\n also carefully reviewed during class time. Le
ss formal discussion of \nresearch and clinical questions that arise durin
g the training is \nscheduled and conducted as needed. Upon completion of
the course\, \ntrainees are given several booklets to take with them for c
ontinued \nstudy and practice in preparation for certification testing. Th
e \ncertification process takes an additional 18 months and consists of \n
three tests taken at 6-month intervals. Each test is a set of about ten \n
transcripts to be coded.\n\n\nCost: $3000 This price covers the two-week t
raining and the follow-up certification process.\n\nProfessors Howard Stee
le &amp\; Miriam Steele\, Center for Attachment Research\,Members of the C
onsortium of AAI Institute TrainersDepartment of Psychology\, New School f
or Social Research\, New YorkWe are happy to learn of your interest in the
2026 New York City Adult AttachmentInterview Institute. Below we provide
you with background information about AAI Institutes\,and how to register
for the 2026 Institute to be taught via ZOOM.Adult Attachment Interview In
stitutes take place over ten days\, and are usually heldMonday through Fri
day over two weeks in succession. One transcript is assigned each daydurin
g the week\, and one over the weekend (no meetings on Saturday or Sunday).
The AAI institute is intensive\, and involves analysis of about 7 or 8 AAI
transcripts in&nbsp\;succession. Meetings take place about 5 – 6 hours
a day (though sometimes considerably moretime is needed to discuss a parti
cular case). Their central purpose is to discuss scoring andclassification
of the transcript assigned for the previous night\, which will also take
you 4-6 hoursto prepare. In addition to the group meeting\, that will fini
sh at 3PM daily\, we will remain on theZoom call\, to be available to hear
and answer all individuals’ questions or concerns. Usually by3:30 or 3:
45pm we have completed this open question session and participants then tu
rn to theirhomework that should be returned via email to reach us at least
one hour before the start of thenext day’s Zoom meeting. This helps the
trainers identify where to best focus the teaching. We have a number of pr
ior years’ experience of teaching on Zoom and for summer 2026we have ide
ntified a reasonable limit on participation\, with the goal of accepting n
o more than 40participants\, so that each participant has an opportunity t
o make comments\, seek clarification\,and ask questions in the full group\
, and in break-out groups. Experience has taught us that this isthe best w
ay of learning this language-focused technique – which at some point com
es down torequiring exacting analysis of a single sentence – i.e. by que
stioning and discussing the “rules”seen in the scoring and classificat
ion manual as they are made applicable to particular transcripts.Because o
f the complexity of the multi-dimensional scoring system\, institutes are
in their essencedidactic–with–comments\, and do not leave room for det
ailed discussion of cases or systems ofnarrative analysis other than those
under formal consideration\, i.e. Adult Attachment Scoring andClassificat
 ion Systems (Main\, Goldwyn\, &amp\;amp\; Hesse\, 2003\, unpublished docum
ent). Should youregister for the Institute\, this document will be sent to
you via courier\, to reach you in early June2026\, as a hard printed soft
bound document (circa 225 pages plus appendices). It is one ofmany docume
nts to be sent as soft bound copies\, that are vital to the training\, and
only evershared with participants at AAI Institutes – not to be shared
beyond this group. The Institute meetings over Zoom will begin promptly at
 9:30am (EST\, New York)\, andend formally around 3:00pm or 15:00 hours. We
take regular breaks including a 15 mincoffee/tea break at 11:00 am and a
45 min lunch break from 12:45pm to 1:30pm. So 90 minutesis the longest str
etch for a Zoom meeting\, at the start of the day (9:30-11:00)\, and end o
 f the day(13:30-15:00)\, with a 75 minute Zoom meeting before lunch (11:15
 -12:45)\, including a 15 min.break-out session in small groups of 4-5 peop
le before lunch where a specified question relevantto the training will be
asked. Of course\, Zoom\, permits questions being asked at any time via t
heChat function.Following the institute\, you will have the further opport
unity to become a Certified AAICoder\, by analyzing 32 or so transcripts a
nd obtaining above a level of 80% classificationagreement with us. These t
ranscripts are downloaded by you in three sets of ten\, and once youfinish
one sub-set of 10 and receive feedback\, you are invited to download the
next set of 10\, andthen the final set of 10\, with a fourth set available
in case of a rough start (i.e. missing reliabilityone one of the three se
ts). For those completing three consecutive sets of transcripts\, there ha
sbeen a fairly steady pass rate of about 80%. The certification process is
included in the fee forthe course as a whole\, and the course fee is the
same for all participants regardless of whetherone undertakes reliability
certification after the Institute. Upon successful completion of thereliab
ility check\, you will receive a formal\, signed certification letter stat
ing that you haveobtained above 80% agreement with Erik Hesse (Convenor of
the Consortium of AAI Trainers)across both the three-way (secure-autonomo
 us\, dismissing\, preoccupied) and four-way (theabove plus the unresolved/
disorganized) analysis of the AAI.We look forward to seeing you on Zoom i
n 2026. Please note that a form for yourresponse is included on the next p
age. Returning this page to Howard Steele(steeleh@newschool.edu) will begi
n your application to attend.CE credits (introduction) and cancellation po
licyIf you do attend\, especially\, if you want to receive CE credits (for
an extra nominal fee of$50) in respect of your license as a mental health
counselor\, social worker or psychologist\, youmust attend ALL sessions a
nd complete the post Institute evaluation regarding how well youthought th
e learning objectives were achieved. For all attending\, who pay the depos
it\, prior toreceiving the courier package of many hundreds of confidentia
l pages soft bound in 10 or morebooklets\, a full refund may be issued if
you need to cancel. After receipt of the courier package\,refunds will be
issued less the cost of printing the materials that go into the courier pa
ckage andthe costs of secure delivey through UPS (this amounts typically t
o the $500 deposit)\, so $2500 ofthe $3000 fee may be returned to you if y
ou need to cancel after receiving the courier package. And you would need t
o return the courier package to us\, if you cancel\, at your expense.Since
